Haiku
Back in my radio days, I loved the challenge of writing thirty second spots. The approach demanded discipline. And cadence. There was no room to dawdle as words and time were precious commodities. And so it is with Haiku poetry where every syllable requires power and presence. Its 5-7-5 syllabic format beckons the best of one’s vocabulary and frequent visits to thesaurus dot com.
As a member of Poets.org and a devotee of The Poetry Foundation, I urge you to learn more about Haiku – then grab a pen and express your own inner poet.
Sandpiper
Two delicate steps
erased by shimmering glass.
Speckled wings take flight.
Contemplating Autumn
Warm hands cradle steam
From her cocoa-laden cup
As aspen leaves fall.
Bound by the Script
What we’ve got here is
Failure to communicate.
Too many Cool Hands.
Anticipation
Uggs by the entrance
Barefoot contessa exhales.
Lover’s at the door.
Haicool
Jazz on Pandora.
His complex beat intrigues me.
Take Five. Brubeck’s best.
Old Friend
His walk is hobbled.
With one hand on my shoulder
He shares his laughter.
Spin City Redux
White House under seige.
Does fake news Trump the message
Or the messenger?
V8 Gone Awry
Centrifugal paste
As veggies leave the blender.
Next time use the lid!
The Earth Moved
Northridge aftershocks
As Light My Fire ended
Tangled in the sheets.
